Who are recruiters?
Recruiters are people who work independently of a hiring company, like a staffing firm. Often, they are contracted by a company to fill positions, but are also compensated if they find a candidate the company wants to hire.
Where do you find them?
More often than not, they will reach out to you through a professional networking site (like LinkedIn), but it’s also possible for you to reach out to them directly. If you do decide to reach out yourself, make sure you choose someone who specializes in the field or industry you are looking to work in, such as IT or technology. They will have the best opportunities for you!
How exactly does it work?
First, the recruiter will call you for an informational-style interview to get a sense of your background and your ultimate career goals (need tips for your phone interview check out our blog How to Land the Job with a Phone Interview) . This will give them a sense of whether or not you would be a good fit for the company. After the initial interview, they will contact you if they think you are right for the position.
Once you are contacted, you can decide whether or not you want to be considered for this specific opportunity. When you decide you are ready to move forward, the recruiter will then send your resume on to the company and help coordinate any interviews that might follow. If at any point during the interview process the company decides they want to move forward with another candidate, the recruiter will be sure to get additional feedback for you to improve upon for your job search.
How do you make the most of it?
Using a recruiter can be the best thing you do throughout your career search. However, it is up to you to be honest about your career goals, background and how you feel about the positions the recruiter offers you. If the position seems anything less than right to you, it’s probably best to let the person you are working with know right away. The earlier you voice your concerns, the better. Also, be sure to stay in close contact with your recruiter. Follow up with them if you haven’t heard back from them in a few weeks. It is also important to let them know if you have found a job on your own so they can stop considering you for positions.
