The prevalence of overweight and obese adults and children in Central Florida has increased dramatically over the past 20 years. According to a recent study by the Winter Park Health Foundation, one third of all adults in Winter Park are obese and over half feel that there are limited resources available for combating obesity through proper nutrition and exercise. Additionally, 31% of children in Winter Park are overweight or obese and 22.2% of everyone in Central Florida are obese. Compounding the concern is the fact that family time is on the decline, one third of children do not participate in any after-school activities and today’s youth are the first generation ever, with a shorter life expectancy than their parents.
YMCA of Central Florida is working harder than ever to strengthening the community, encourage healthy living and promote lifestyle changes. We as a community must make unprecedented strides in eliminating chronic illnesses like obesity, diabetes and heart disease. We want to promote healthy living for everyone in the community—regardless of age, income or background. You don’t have to make the change alone, the Y is your support group and will continue to change the lives of families across Central Florida.
