How to Successfully Change Careers

Today, there are a lot of people who are switching jobs. As of January 2014, there is an estimated 29 million Americans that have attempted a career change after the age of 45. Kavaliro’s Louis Douglas recently discussed the topic FOX 35’s Good Day Orlando to talk about how to change careers the right way. Check out the top reasons why people change their careers below!

Money

  • Money is always a big motivating factor when it comes to changing careers. Although it does not always mean a better work environment, it is a way to balance any new role. Nearly 70 percent of those who said they changed careers successfully saw their pay either stay the same or rise, while around 30 percent saw their salary fall.

Location

  • People often change jobs due to their location. This is a huge reason as to why people may or may not take on a new position. A lot of people want to stay close to home due to traffic, children and even pets. It’s important to feel connected to your surrounding community, which is why many people prefer working closer to home.

The Inside

  • There are people who are lucky enough to know someone who is already working at their dream company, which can give someone the edge they need to change positions. Many companies have generous referral programs for new hires, so it’s not uncommon for those already working for the company to recruit colleagues and friends to join their team.

Most of the people who have changed careers are very happy with the change. Of course, there will always be challenges. Some people take pay cuts for their dream position. However, most of those that made a change took salaries that were equal or higher than what they previously had.

To be successful in jumping careers, you need to be prepared to answer why you left your old career. It is an important factor when it comes to whether or not you are going to be hired. You also need to make sure that you have the adequate skill set and qualifications for the job you are applying for.

Make sure that you do not say anything negative when it comes to your old place of work. Also, make sure that you are not saying anything that could damage your character. It’s important to stay positive when you are interviewing for the position of your dreams.
