Employer and employee relationships can often be complex and tough to navigate. It’s especially difficult to manage when you decide to use a potential job offer as leverage for more money from your current company. But what happens if your current company counteroffers?
Counteroffers can often be counterproductive and need to be strongly evaluated for all the pros and cons. Counteroffers must be deeply considered in all aspects because there’s much more to remember than just a raise in pay. The experts at national staffing agency Kavaliro are here to share their insight on three reasons why it might not be a good decision to accept a counteroffer:
1.) Out in the Open
Now that your employer is aware of your thoughts to leave the company, don’t be surprised if you find yourself on the chopping block. It is estimated that the probability of leaving (voluntarily or involuntarily) your current job after accepting a counteroffer is as high as 80 percent.
There’s also a good chance that the counteroffer is just a way for a company to buy more time to search for a replacement. Even worse, it might mean just saving enough time for an employer to eliminate the position altogether. This instance came true for one candidate handled by Kavaliro resource manager, Angel Diaz. Angel said, “it resulted in the candidate being laid off two months after accepting a counteroffer.”
2.) Power Play
Getting this new power of salary through a counteroffer may seem like a good thing at the time, but it could fade quickly. In addition to an increase in salary, you may find yourself in a new role with more responsibilities that you’re not quite ready to handle. This is not always the case but it is true in many scenarios.
According to resource manager at Kavaliro, Ryley Fitzsimmons, people tend to forget what drove them to the breaking point with their current company. Was it working the night shift or possibly the way you have been treated? Will getting a promotion or more money fix this?
“In most cases, the answer is not likely. Once the appeal of a raise fades, you’ll find yourself later dissatisfied with the same factors that lead you to look for a new position in the first place,” said Fitzsimmons.
3.) Lonely Lunch
As soon as word spreads that you’re not happy with your place in the company, you might find yourself eating alone. Disapproving co-workers might leave you out of the inner-circle with the fear of being associated with an unhappy employee.
Having an unreliable employee can fracture office morale and may give an employer further reason to release one if cutbacks are ever necessary. Once a counteroffer is accepted, expect your relationships with your supervisors and co-workers to drastically change as a result of your search for a different position.
