Consultant of the Month: Cory McCall

Join us in celebrating our Consultant of the Month, Cory McCall!🎉

We’d like to introduce you to Kavaliro’s September Consultant of the Month, Cory McCall. Cory is currently supporting one of Kavaliro’s Federal Clients as an Information System Security Officer.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, and currently residing in Taneytown, Maryland, Cory brings experience, passion, and dedication to his role. His journey into the world of Information Assurance is a testament to his curiosity and drive, making him a standout amongst his peers.

Cory’s academic achievements are impressive to put it lightly. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from West VirginiaCory Mall of America University, a Master’s degree from the University of Maryland Global Campus, and a Doctorate in Business Administration with a focus on Information Systems from California Intercontinental University. His enthusiasm regarding learning and growth is evident in every aspect of his life.

In tandem with continuing his education, Cory’s cybersecurity career began while performing Windows Admin work at the National Security Agency (NSA). When there was no Security Administrator available, he took the initiative to learn and manage the Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs), creating and renewing Information Security (IS) packages for re-accreditation and authorization. This pivotal moment led him to transition into Information Assurance, where he has since thrived. Currently, Cory is expanding his knowledge by supporting both Traditional Security (SSO Team) and Information System environments on his contract. This dual role allows him to deepen his expertise and contribute even more to his team’s success.

Today, his favorite part of the job (other than laughing and joking around while he’s working) is receiving that all-important letter from the government stating that a new or existing IS package is now authorized or re-authorized—a tangible reward for his hard work and expertise.

Because of that hard work and expertise, Cory has recently received recognition for outstanding performance from the Department of Defense and Department of the Army. Excerpt from his letter of recognition follows: “His exceptional performance and proactive approach to security management and unwavering commitment to maintaining a secure environment are critical to mission success.”

Outside of work, Cory is a man of many talents who has a diverse set of hobbies and interests. He loves traveling, sports, grilling, and taking long drives while listening to music and running with his kids. Using his IT background, he also enjoys creating AI tools (and is currently working on one that can provide a custom stock trade analysis). Another fun fact, he knows sign language and plays a little piano! His diverse hobbies and skills reflect his adventurous and inquisitive spirit.

One of Cory’s proudest accomplishments is completing his doctorate, a milestone he attributes to God’s guidance. He’s also very proud of his children, obtaining and holding his clearance and his perseverance during the grueling 6 to 8-hour STIG Reviewer tests at the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) at Ft. Letterkenny, PA. Despite the challenges that may come, Cory approaches life with gratitude, saying, “I complain some days, but still wake up to a dream.”

When asked for advice for those looking to enter his field, Cory emphasizes the importance of versatility. “Know a little bit about all technology roles—system administration, database, development, network, VTC, etc. You don’t have to know everything, just a little,” he advises. He also recommends learning the Risk Management Framework (RMF) process, acquiring certifications like CISSP or CASP, and becoming familiar with STIGs, SSPs, and Security Classification Guides.

Cory also shared his appreciation for Kavaliro, saying, “I was grateful to train earlier this year in Florida and appreciate the opportunity of working with Kavaliro. I have a great PMO. Although I’m on a contract, Kavaliro reminds me that I have a family to reach out to if I have any questions. I enjoy seeing the new ways they are incentivizing employees and boosting morale. Keep it going! ”

The entire Kavaliro team is proud of Cory’s accomplishments, dedication, and vision for the future. His commitment not only advances the goals of his team but also sets a standard for innovation and excellence in technology. Congratulations, Cory, on this well-deserved recognition!”
