Social media hurting your job hunt

We are all aware of the benefits social media can have on our career. From Facebook, to Twitter, to LinkedIn, social media can be used to promote ourselves and advertise our expertise. However, social media can just as quickly hurt or even destroy your career when used irresponsibly and inappropriately.

Two of the biggest red flags for employers are unprofessional photos and impulsive/emotional posts or tweets. Forbes writer, Kashmir Hill said, “The Facebook page is the first interview; if you don’t like a person there, you probably won’t like working with them.” So, the next time you are considering posting a picture from a wild night out or tweeting about a sensitive topic, remember your Facebook page is the first interview!

In fact, 63 percent of employers research social media sites before even considering a candidate for an interview. It’s simple, be smart about how you utilize social media. Do not allow an inappropriate photo or tweet rob you from a potentially career changing interview. Keep it clean, keep it classy!
