Ask yourself, “Why am I stressed out?”

Usually you can avoid stressing about deadlines or projects by planning ahead and setting realistic goals and expectations. If you’re in trouble for missing a deadline, be honest and work with your boss to figure out how much time you need to dedicate for this task. They may not understand how much work goes into it.

Stop Multi-Tasking

When you try to do more than one thing at a time, you aren’t giving your full attention to anything.  Instead, try to start and finish one task at a time. This goes for family time, too. Start with no phones at the dinner table or only return emails after the kids are in bed. You can also try to only check your work email in the morning before everyone else is awake. That way you will know what you are walking into when you get to work. If there are any fires to put out, it  can be addressed before coworkers even arrive.

Someone Else Got a Promotion You Wanted

You have let go of things you can’t control and take ownership of the things you can control. Ask a mentor or manager for some time to talk about your career development. Perhaps he or she can see things you can’t and help you land that next promotion. You can also take the initiative to go after a certification or degree that can help set you apart from your peers.

Stay in Control

Remember that your emotions affect your credibility. If it’s hard to keep your cool in a difficult situation, close your eyes and take three deep breaths before responding.  If you are face-to-face, buy yourself some time. You can respond by saying, “Can I think about this for a minute? I’ll send you an email so we can chat about it.”

Talk to Someone

Many companies have an employee assistance program (EAP) for visits to a therapist. If your company does not, talking to a friend can help. Often times it isn’t about finding a solution, just recognizing your feelings and not letting them build up.

Take Care of Yourself

You can handle stress better when you feel good, physically and mentally. Don’t forget that exercise and sleep are important and to plan for “me” time. If you are always asking for permission to take time yourself, you feel guilty about it. If it’s already scheduled, you won’t feel guilty. Plan something for yourself one night of the week and stick to it. It’s important to have time in your life where you’re not working or focused on others. Have that time to do whatever is important to you and don’t feel guilty about it.
